VEAES gives thanks and recognizes that we work and meet on the stolen,
unceded joint territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil Waututh),
and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nations.

We are deeply saddened by the recent tragedy and the immense sorrow it has brought to the Filipino community, as well as to the students, educators, and families across our school communities, particularly those at John Oliver Secondary, South Hill Education Centre, Sir Alexander Mackenzie Elementary, John Henderson Elementary, and others affected.

In moments like this, words often fall short. Please know that your grief is shared by many, and you are not alone. We mourn alongside you and honour the strength, culture, and resilience of the Lapu Lapu Filipino community during this heartbreaking time.

We are incredibly moved by the compassion and solidarity shown by VEAES members. Your dedication to one another and the well-being of your students and communities in the face of such loss is both admirable and deeply meaningful. It is a reflection of the care and courage that help carry us through our most difficult days.

In the days ahead, we encourage everyone to care for themselves and each other, to reach out for support, and to hold space for healing-however that may look for you. Grief takes time, and no one should have to walk through it alone.

Our hearts are with the families, friends, and loved ones of those affected. We are here for you and remain committed to offering support in any way we can.

Please contact our office if you need assistance or simply someone to talk to as we move forward together.

If you have been directly affected, the B.C. Crime Victim Assistance Program offers free counselling and mental health supports.

All VSB employees also have access to the VSB Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP), which offers short-term counselling benefits to anyone who feels the need for support.

All BCTF members also have access to the BCTF Health and Wellness Program, through which a health and wellness coordinator is assigned to you and they can guide you through the process of receiving the care and resources you need.

A 24-hour assistance center has been set up at Douglas Park Community Center to support victims and their families https://vancouver.ca/home-property-development/lapu-lapu-day-masscasualty-incident.aspx.

Family Emergency Response organized by Vancouver Filipino Emergency with links to offer support to victims’ families https://vanfilemergency.my.canva.site/.

If you require any assistance in navigating these resources, please do not hesitate to reach out to the VEAES office at (604) 873-8378. Your VEAES reps are ready to answer your call.
